Growing Greener Schools

Children from two local schools located in rural areas of East Yorkshire have taken part in phase 1 of the project. All activities cover elements of the curriculum for key stages 1 & 2 and covers a range of subjects such as Literacy, Numeracy, Environment and Art.

The children undertake a range of different activities in two themed zones.

Activities include:

  • Design of a school vegetable plot
  • Where our food comes from (food miles)
  • Locally produced food
  • Planting and growing
  • Recycling
  • The role of nature in the garden

The second stage of the project involves the children's families and the water community.

  • Completion of a Growers Diary
  • Planting of seeds
  • Poster design to persuade others to 'grow their own'.
  • Gardener's Questiontime

The final stage planned for September will be the development of a school vegetable plot and a recognition ceremony for the children who took part.

A key area of our work is supporting communities to become 'Greener', to minimise the effects of climate change.  This project is funded by The Ernest Cook Trust
