Reduce your Energy Costs

The Village Halls Sustainability Project, which has come to an end, was established for the benefit of Village Halls and similar Community Buildings in the East Riding of Yorkshire, North and North East Lincolnshire.

Aims: To help Management Committees of Community Buildings:

  • Identify and implement energy saving and waste reduction measures to lower hall running costs
  • Meet and comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, thereby improving access for all members of your community

Why: When running costs are lowered and access improved, the warmth and comfort of the community building will be increased. New individuals and groups may also be encouraged to use your facility. This will provide your management committee with more disposable income to invest in on-going maintenance and marketing. As a result your building will be in a more sustainable situation as will the planet!

How was the project delivered: The Village Halls Officer conducted the following:

  • Audit of community buildings to assess it for Energy Efficiency and Disability Access
  • Helped implement the recommendations made in the audit report by:
    • identifying potential funding sources, and provide advice during the application process
    • locating suppliers or trades-people to provide quotations for required work.
    • advising on specialised equipment, sustainable building products or renewable energy options

This project was solely funded by Defra’s Rural, Social and Community Programme. Alongside this project an invaluable research project was undertaken to identify village hall’s financial sustainability. The Research Report is now available as a downloadable document.
