Neighbourhood Planning is a new way for communities to decide the future of spatial planning development in their community, as it relates to the building of Homes, Shops and Offices. This includes what new buildings should look like. If communities succesfully complete the various stages of the process and receive the backing of their community through a referendum, planning permission will be granted for new buildings they want to see go ahead.
The new coalition government is pressing ahead with legislation in the Localism Bill, which will enshrine the principle of Neighbourhood Planning in law. The Localism Bill is currently being debated in Parliament at the moment.
A set of new documents have recently been published by the Department for Communities and Local Government on Neighbourhood Planning and they can be downloaded from this page.
